We built our house when we were newlyweds. We literally celebrated our one year anniversary while pouring the concrete floor. When we built we didn’t finish the basement and since our upstairs was enough for us, 10 years later we now have a need. We always planned to have a big family room in part of the basement, we just didn’t realize that we would actually need a gym.
So instead of a family room we are building a gym. That’s right a GYM… Living in the Midwest where it is freezing cold 75% of the year and needing an outlet for before and afterschool, this gym will be the key to our survival. We are also hoping this will cut down on some of our traveling since we live in a rural area and travel weekly for therapy an hour away. Roughly our dimensions are 25 feet x 30 feet that we will be finishing. Here’s what the layout looks like.
We will be finishing half of our basement, around the utility room, the stairs and adding a door to the other half of the basement so that this side is completely finished off.
To make this into a sensory gym we didn’t need to do too much changing to our original plan. We did need to think about safety. Since Miss Sensory is a seeker and everything needs to be thoroughly touched (meaning she gets into everything) we have planned to have locked doors on the utility room, the closet under the stairs and the door to the unfinished half.
We also had to think ahead to where we wanted to install swings. The X’s on the layout are where we have added support to our trusses to add in hardware for swings. The two on the top left are for playground swing, monkey rings, platform swing and cuddle swing. The two on the middle are for aerial yoga hammocks. One for Miss Sensory and one for me. We are planning on having a TV on the wall of the stairway so we will be able to see the aerial yoga video.
I had read this amazing article that featured a Minnesota designer and her work with decorating autism spaces. I am hoping to keep our colors very earth toned (orange, yellow and tan) for this project. So the floor will be a very light maple almost like a gym floor. The walls I’m thinking a warm toned greige, and then with all of the toys for this area adding pops of color.
Similar to these pictures I found as inspiration.
Right now we are still in the drywall phase, and it is taking FOREVER! So, I am working on my list of dream sensory products.
