We have arrived in Denver and survived a very long drive with a sensory seeker! It was rough, but we made it. It took a couple days to get her back on schedule. If you ever wonder if your child’s sleep- or lack thereof- could get any worse…put her in a car and drive for hours and then arrive at a hotel and attempt to sleep- you’ll find out it does get worse, it’s also the cure to feeling bad about your home life.
So all of last week was filled with multiple appointments at the Star Center. We are doing an intensive designed for out of state clients. Lots of evaluations and beginning to work with the OT. Lots of parent information. I think most of last week I ran high on anxiety and adrenaline. For one I couldn’t believe we were doing this trip and two I was nervous about getting the results we are hoping for. Fingers crossed that this will change our world. We just need this. I am not out to fix Miss Sensory but I sure hope we can learn as parents how to help her be more successful.
I consider myself to be an expert on Miss Sensory and I’d say I’ve got a pretty good handle on all things related to Sensory Processing Disorder. I’ve read everything I’ve gotten my hands on and we even attended an OT conference with our entire team back home. I’ve definitely had my knowledge challenged this week, this is a whole new level. Everything is based on research and results and I’m hoping to get my head wrapped around it.
I can see the differences in their therapy, I can see the thorough testing and working treatment towards her needs and not a one size fits all. Let’s hope we can take what we learn home and implement it in our house. I am hoping I am seeing glimmers of hope, something that we’ve been lacking for a while. But I am still holding my breath…
We’ve had a little bit of free time around here too. Luckily, we are both able to work a little while we are here so we swap out time in our day in between therapy appointments. And we did have a little bit of time for fun this week and enjoyed a few fun activities. We got up close with a polar bear, visited a splash pad and tried out some bungee trampoline jumping just to name a few.
